"Reach for the Stars" with CHI Hotels and Resorts

"Reach for the Stars" with CHI Hotels and Resorts
Awardees with Corinthia Group & CHI executives including Pisani brothers, Tony Potter, & hotel GMs

Malta-based CHI Hotels & Resorts (CHI) held a graduation ceremony at the Corinthia Hotel St. George’s Bay, Malta to award proficiency certificates to 37 departmental operational coaches from CHI’s Malta hotels who have concluded an intensive "Reach for the Stars" train the trainer program. This was developed by the company’s corporate talent division as one of the modules of a more comprehensive set of 123s included in CHI’s newly-launched corporate operational training manual, which has been endorsed by the Institute of Hospitality Industry of the United Kingdom.

Under the guidance of training and development manager Petra Ellul-Mercer, a nucleus of specialized trainers were selected on the criteria of their positive work attitude, willingness to help others, service delivery skills, and excellent job knowledge. They will now be imparting their newly-gained training skills and CHI’s company values to all their colleagues at their place of work.

The award ceremony took place amid a firmament of glowing stars and upbeat motivational sounds and visuals that afforded the graduates an amusing look back at their training period. They were then presented with their certificates by CHI’s chief executive officer and managing director Tony Potter in the presence of Corinthia Group co-founders Joe, George, and Victor Pisani.

Congratulating the newly-qualified trainers, Tony Potter commented: “At a time when the industry is experiencing a lull in business due to the current economic situation, it is encouraging to see so much trust, initiative, and enthusiasm emerge from our very own ranks, both in terms of our talent teams at our corporate office and our hotels across all our brands, namely Corinthia, Wyndham, Ramada Plaza, and independent properties. Many team members are heeding our call to come forward and grasp this opportunity to improve their skills and train their colleagues in readiness for the upsurge in business levels that is bound to follow these lean times.”

During the ceremony, another key training program was launched, targeting specifically the international Corinthia five-star brand. The "Spirit of Corinthia Hospitality Worldwide" is a cultural training program focusing on all team members, including top management. It is due to be launched within the third quarter of this year.

ETOA’s City Break: Great way to experience the new EU countries

ETOA’s City Break: Great way to experience the new EU countries

By Nelson Alcantara | Jul 01, 2009

Gothenburg, Sweden, played host to this year’s well-received City Break, organized by the European Tour Operators Association in partnership with Reed Travel Exhibitions.

The event allowed city tourism suppliers in Europe to meet with leading tour operators and online agents. “The quality of buyer delegates who attended City Break was excellent. They all seemed serious within the appointments, said exhibitor Denise Atkinson. “I am really hoping that some of this will translate into real business.”

City Break brought together buyers and suppliers using a system of pre-scheduled appointments. Tour operators, wholesalers and online distributors have the opportunity to meet hoteliers, city tourist boards and ground service suppliers and source new destinations and new product. “City Break 2009 helped us establish new buyers from airlines, on line booking agents and brokers, as well as specialist operators interested in collaborating in a good number of the countries where we have hotels,” said Nicholas Borg of Corinthia Hotels.

The great European cities, from Amsterdam to Zurich, were represented, including Antwerp, Barcelona, Bilbao, Bratislava, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin, Geneva, Helsinki, Ljubljana, Madrid, Malmo, Oslo, Rotterdam, Salzburg, Split, Stockholm, Valencia, Vienna, Warsaw, Zagreb and many more. The cities of Eastern Europe are well represented, including Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw and Belgrade. “I like City Breaks as a real meeting of professionals with professionals,” said Andrzej Rutkowski, who traveled all the way from Poland.

“Ideal venue to discuss current market situation and review future commitments,” said Stefano Camassa. “It also helped me look more into city destinations rather then the country destination.”

As for the host city, Anousjka Schmidt of Brussels International said: “Great city, great venue, great organization, great appointments. Thanks for everything! I am already looking forward to my fifth participation.”

Indeed, with the positive response from both exhibitors and buyers, City Break has affirmed it place as a new way to experience the new EU countries and what their cities have to offer. Weekend holidays, short meeting and events, everything can be found in cities in Europe. “We think it is a great opportunity to have a workshop, specializing in our major business theme as city hotels and attractions. Here not the size matters but the quality of the event,” said Kurther Mandurg of Kronprinz Hotels in Germany.

The Gothenburg event hosted 190 delegates from 130 companies from 70 cities, based in 25 countries. Among them were 108 exhibitors and 76 buyers from 63 companies based in 15 countries.

European hotels focus on rapid increase in direct web bookings

European hotels focus on rapid increase in direct web bookings

By eTN

CHICAGO, IL - In 2007, more than 30 percent of bookings came from direct web bookings — a trend expected to grow as consumers make higher-value purchases online. This and other key Internet marketing trends were the focus of discussion for more than 200 European participants in three regional seminars hosted in September by TravelCLICK, the leader in hotel ecommerce solutions.

The seminars, drawing decision-makers from hotels in and around Athens, Budapest and Vienna, were designed to illuminate the latest trends in Hotel Internet Marketing and provide actionable strategies and tactics for general managers, reservation managers and directors of sales and marketing in luxury hotels and resorts. Along with TravelCLICK hotel emarketing experts, local representatives of industry leaders including Booking.com, Coral Int., Google, www.griechenland.com by BSO, and MS - marketing and sales, shared insights and best practices. For example, hotels need to:

· Incorporate consumer reviews and ratings into their marketing strategy, as these reviews are an increasingly important influence on consumer hotel purchase decisions

· Be wherever consumers are shopping on the Web; online shoppers visit at least three to four websites before making an online purchase decision

· Proactively monitor their position on search engines and online travel agencies, as well as track their consumer reviews

· Leverage booking engines to increase the booking value of each reservation with add-ons, packages and onsite services

“Our seminar participants understand the changing face of distribution and the increasing importance of the Internet,” said Jan Tissera, president of TravelCLICK International. “For hoteliers who want to stay ahead of the competition, Internet strategies are critical to driving demand and converting online bookings.”

For the first half of 2008, TravelCLICK empowered its hotels to achieve a 57 percent increase in revenue — 23 points higher than the overall market. The higher-than-market performance for European hotels is attributed to TravelCLICK’s industry-recognized best practices for driving revenue through electronic channels, personalized service to hoteliers and an unmatched network of local market experts assigned to each hotel. Hoteliers can see the revenue and room night trends for their local markets online.

The Scottish Hotel Awards

2009 results | 2010 nominations now open

“On March 1st 2009 the annual Scottish hotels awards were held for the sixth time. As usual, this year’s Awards Night Party – Scotland’s biggest dedicated hoteliers' event, the official opening evening of ScotHot '09 – was as sparkling, emotional, slightly irreverent and enjoyable as ever… thanks to the spirit of an industry determined to stay upbeat and constructive! The annual party and gala dinner was held at the Crowne Plaza, SECC Glasgow. Check out the photos!

Over 360 hoteliers attended, with the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, Alex Fergusson MSP, handing over the top awards of the lively evening including the Hotel of the Year title to Western House in Ayr – who received a crystal stars trophy and a rare magnum of Bisol’s flagship wine, ‘Crede’. “An outstanding hotel”, said the ‘speaker’ of our parliament, “and a fitting tribute appropriately made to a ‘Burn’s Country’ hotel in the Year of Homecoming”.

Hoteliers of the Year 2009 were named as Wendy & Don Matheson of Boath House; Man of the Year 2009 is Norman Springford, Executive Chairman of Apex Hotels Group – who also won Hotel Group of the Year. Manager of the Year 2009 title was presented by the Presiding Officer to Seamus Coen of Macdonald Hotels.

For the complete list of winners, please click here for a PDF list. But from the Isles of Coll, Arran and Skye and more, from Wigtown in Galloway to Tongue and Lochinver in the far north, Inverness, Aberdeen – all the cities in fact – to the Borders, hoteliers with drive came to party. At a party with a purpose!

The awards will promote and celebrate Homecoming Scotland 2009!

The reviewers, experienced Scottish hotel judges and event team who organised the process and event were joined by a number of high-profile industry partners and guests. Celebrated Scottish cookery writer and columnist Lady Claire Macdonald, herself a Highland hotelier, presented the food category awards alongside Neil Thomson, CEO of the Federation of Chefs Scotland, a member of the Awards Committee. Paul Wilson of Xpress Recruitment and writers for FoodReview Scotland and various guide books and magazines assisted the chairman and deputy chairman who hosted the event.

The Scottish Hotel Awards raise funds for HIT Scotland scholarships and in 2009 will work more closely than ever with the organisation Federation of Chefs Scotland

No other Scottish hotel awards draw on such a continuity of knowledge and procedure, and none are as thorough, people-centred and high-profile. We worked on nominations, considered finalists and monitored consumer feedback both online and via report postcards for over a year. And until these official Scottish hotels awards were announced by a range of VIPs at the dinner – the opening event of ScotHot ’09 which was launched by the First Minister – we didn’t cease our round of professional review and critical judging visits / interviews. The event itself raised funds for the scholarship programme of HIT Scotland, represented on the 2009 Awards Committee by their dedicated CEO, David Cochrane.

The Scottish Hotel Awards 2009 results will feature in a double page spread in our partner magazine, Scotland Magazine The work of Polish-born staff contributing to the Scottish hotel industry was honoured

After welcoming arrival Champagne provided by Procure Wizard, the show opened with a Homecoming Scotland 2009 theme in video and live song; a Flag Bearer with an official flag from the Scottish Flag Trust in Athelstaneford led in the Awards Panel in procession; later in the night Keith Jack, sexy Dalkieth-born star of the hit reality TV show ‘Any Dream Will Do’, had everyone up dancing to his sensational voice.

There were striking new indoor fireworks from Acclaim Fireworks… a trio of burlesque acts from Club Noir pushed buttons and boundaries… and in an emotional moment the Fellowship 2009 was presented to the people of Poland, to mark the “outstanding contribution of Polish-born staff to the industry”: this was received by the Scotland-loving Consul-General Aleksander Dietkow. This delighted all concerned and the night, indeed, saw three Polish nationals now living in Scotland being recognised on merit for the quality of their achievements here. Alex Fergusson called the Fellowship’s dedication “just and justified, an honour with my full support”.

FoodReviewScotland.com introduces the Foodstars rating scheme in 2009 and is a Partner of the awards

2009 may have its challenges for hoteliers but March 1st was a night when forward-thinking, passion, dedication and hard work was celebrated – and Scotland has much talent and success to recognise in this vital national industry, ‘Scotland’s handshake with the world’, as we put it this year.

Indeed we toasted such with beautiful ‘Jeio’ Bisol, the ‘finest Prosecco from Italy since 1542’, generously arranged by Bibendum. At the heart of our mission over the next couple of years, as the awards are operated by Review Guides who are now launching FoodReview Scotland, is a determination to show the world that Scotland can offer some of the finest food to be found anywhere.

Soon we look forward to an exciting development when The Scottish Hotel Guide will be introduced as the official partner of the awards and the highest quality online critic and consumer guide to Scotland's best hotels. But for now we would like to thank the Crowne Plaza Glasgow and some key people there – manager Dominic; Andrew in events; Mark in banqueting; and Kenneth, head chef – for their hard work and professionalism in delivering a memorable event to their peers in the Scottish hotel industry. Their service to us organisers was 5-star, no less. To Peter of PDF Productions who partnered with us in the event management and provided an amazing service with passion and complete identification with our ambitions – kudos!

Thank you to everyone who attended the Awards Night Party on March 1st, and for the kind and often hilarious e-mails of appreciation. Thank you to our sponsors and supporters. We hope you’d a terrific time – and enjoy the photographs. Copies can be provided from our excellent official photographer Walter Neilson or our artistic, in-house reviewer and snapper Ken Scott.

And so – here’s to the 7th Scottish Hotel Awards which will be held in Edinburgh on February 28th 2010 – and as you will see from the side panel above right, nominations, suggestions and supportive comments are invited from now on until January 31st 2010 as we have already embarked on our newly structured, year-long Scottish Hotel Awards Program.”

Por Tor Festival

This Chinese ancestor worship festival takes place in the seventh Chinese lunar month, which is when the Chinese believe that the spirits of the dead are released from the underworld. The Chinese communities in Phuket make food offerings to appease the hungry spirits and to pay their respects. Turtle-shaped cakes are a popular offering as turtles represent longevity. The worshippers believe that these turtle cakes will help prolong their own life. Events take place around Phuket's Chinese shrines at different times over a 15-day period. Like most other festivals Chinese Phuket, there is a lot of food, as well as stage performances.

Phuket Fireworks Festival

This event takes place in mid-August at Saphan Hin on the edge of Phuket City. The scale of the display means that the spectacle can also be enjoyed from other locations, such as Rang Hill, or anywhere along Phuket Bay.

October

Phuket Vegetarian Festival

Street Procession of Gods in Vegetarian Festival Phuket

The Vegetarian Festival takes place at the start of the ninth Chinese lunar month, which falls in late September or early October. This is Phuket's most famous and spectacular festival. The rituals, which last for nine days, are performed to purify both body and mind. During this time, participants go on a strict diet, which is technically vegan as no animal products are allowed to be consumed.

There are processions through the streets and tests of devotion where supplicants perform acts of self-mortification including piercing of the cheeks and tongues with knives and various objects. The more impressive events include ascetic devotees walking on burning coals and climbing ladders with knife-edged rungs. Definitely not for the faint hearted. (For more info see Phuket vegetarian festival).

November

Loi Krathong - 2nd

Loy Krathong

Loi Krathong takes place on the night of the full moon in November and is the most magical of all Thai festivals. Small lotus-shaped boats woven from banana leaves, called krathongs, are floated on water. These vessels contain small flowers, candles, incense and offerings to thank Mother Water for providing water for them to use. Thai people also believe that if they place a strand of hair or nail clipping in the krathong their troubles will be carried away with it.

In Phuket, many people go to Saphan Hin on the edge of Phuket City to launch their krathongs. The beach at Patong is also popular. There you can also float paper lanterns into the sky. Watching hundreds of these glowing lanterns drifting up into the sky over the sea is an enchanting way to spend an evening.

April 2010

Songkran: 13th - 15th

Beginning on the 13th of April Thai people all over the country celebrate the Thai New Year, the most important holiday on the Thai calendar. The holiday is best known for revellers playfully splashing water on each other and dabing scented powder on each others faces as a new year blessing. Over the years this has escalated into a huge water fight where anyone is fair game. People roam the streets armed with high pressure water pistols or stand by the side of the road with buckets and hoses, ready to drench any passer-by. If you venture out during this period, the 13th in particular, expect to get soaked!

Traditionally, however, Songkran is a time of cleaning and renewal. During Songkran Thais perform religious rituals such as cleaning Buddha images, giving alms to the monks and going to the temple to pray. Songkran is also a time for families. Many people return home over the Songkran holiday and pay respect to their elders by sprinkling scented water over their hands. The festival is a 3-day public holiday.

Phuket Bike Week
